the citadel notebook a Huế girl’s notes on her city & beyond
Two women in conical hats that’s me on the left!

Hi, I’m Mai

A Huế girl who left, came back, and fell for her city all over again

I grew up a few streets from the Citadel walls, studied in Saigon, worked in Singapore, and travelled wherever my savings would take me. When I came home, I saw Huế the way visitors do for the first time: the gates, the lotus lakes, the old houses, the people still making things by hand.

This blog is where I write it all down: my city, its heritage, its food, and the trips I take from here.

home Huế, a few streets from the Citadel walls
favourite gate Thượng Tứ, at sunrise
can’t live without Bún bò, my bicycle, my aunt’s chè
next trip Luang Prabang, by slow boat

the small print, but friendly

How I work

No ads, no sponsored posts Nobody pays to be on this blog. No affiliate links either.
Honest, always Hotels, cafés and sites never see a post before it’s published. If I didn’t like something, I say so, kindly.
People say yes first I only photograph and quote people who agree, and I take things down if they ask.
I tell you who I know If I know someone behind a place, the post says so. For example, I know Thiên Ý’s owner, who helped me set up this site.
My own photos Unless a photo is credited to someone else, I took it.
Kept up to date Posts are dated, and I recheck prices and opening times every year.

say hello

Questions about Huế, an artisan I should meet, a correction: [email protected]. I answer everything, slowly.

Hotels and businesses: tell me about yourselves anytime. I don’t accept payment, free stays or meals in exchange for posts.
